Sam Nujoma Dies Aged 95
Namibian history mourns the passing of Sam Nujoma who led the nation to independence while holding the first president role for 15 years until reaching age 95. President Nangolo Mbumba revealed that Nujoma spent three weeks under hospital care at Windhoek before his passing.
Through his leadership Nujoma helped Namibia achieve independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990 while leading the nation for 15 consecutive years as president. The government declared him “Founding Father of the Namibian Nation” during the 2005 commemoration.
The democratic institutions during his leadership played a crucial role in both establishing democratic foundations and facilitating peace-making initiatives to unite the country. His historical accomplishments stand complex because of his actions against opponents in media and homosexuality and autocratic behavior through two major policies: third term constitutional change and Caprivi rebellion repression.
As part of SWAPO history Nujoma established the militant wing of SWAPO before launching guerilla operations against South African authority. The three presidential terms spanning from 1990 to 2005 were followed by his passing which created a notable event in Namibian historical chronicles.
The passing of this leader represents Namibia’s final goodbye to an historic period as the country embraces his vital economic and political worth for its growth and liberty aspirations.
