on mental health amid a worldwide crisis

Geneva, February 7, 2025: The World Health Organization (WHO) has released new global guidelines to address the mental health crisis, which has been exacerbated by the ongoing challenges, financial stress, and increasing social isolation caused by the pandemic.

The new rules prioritize helping vulnerable groups, such as frontline workers, the elderly, and children, by increasing access to mental health resources. “Mental health must be prioritized as a fundamental part of overall health,” said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, emphasizing the urgent need for a universal approach.

The suggestions highlight the need to strengthen national mental health systems, increase public awareness, and integrate mental health treatments into basic healthcare. In order to improve care for people with mental health issues, WHO also recommended governments worldwide to enhance funds.
In the next years, experts warn that the mental health problem might become a major public health concern if nothing is done.
