The Baltic states of Latvia joined forces with Estonia and Lithuania on February 9th 2025 to cut their connection to the Russian power grid thus achieving independence from Russian electricity and boosting national security. The strategic move ends the Baltic countries’ dependence on Russia and Belarus electricity while accelerated by recent geopolitical tensions that include Russia’s Ukraine invasion during 2022.
High-voltage transmission lines located near the Russian border underwent disconnection that ended the power grid connections which dated back to Soviet times. At a Vilnius ceremony European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen participated to mark the significance of this event in maintaining area stability.
The three Baltic states worked independently as isolated power systems for one day until they successfully passed stability tests to connect with the Continental European power network. The countries synchronized their electricity systems with Continental European network units to join the European energy system completely.
The energy system upgrades of the Baltic states have achieved two goals: strong energy security and protection from international power supply manipulation. The strategic action demonstrates both the commitment to European integration standards and resistance to external energies trying to pressure them.
